"Quality" by John Galsworthy

Hello Readers,

Here I'm sharing my another favourite Short-story  named "Quality" written by " John Galsworthy".

◆ About Author :-

"John Galsworthy" the writer of 'Quality' was an English Novelist & playwright. He won the Nobel prize in Literature in 1932.

◆ Introduction :-

This story is about a person named Mr. Teaser. He is an old man & this is a story of his boot making profession. He is very sure about his boots which were made by him in past & which he makes for his customer.

◆ About the Short - Story "Quality" :-

Mr.Gessler, an old man who worked as a boot-maker had a very rare character. He lived with his elder brother who looked like him. They lived into tenement but let into one in the West end. The part of central London where there are many theatres & many large expensive shopes and hotels. But among the expensive shopes, their shop was the simpler one. They didn't give any sign upon its surface. There was just a written on its

"Gessler Brothers"

The writer , John Galsworthy knew him since he was very young, because his father used to order boots to him. John usually ordered his boots to him too. And he always thought that the boots were strange but extremely good, so that's why he admired the maker.

One day when he was in Mr. Gessler's shop he asked shyly to him whether it was greatly hard to make that boots or not. He asked it because he was too curious. Then Mr. Gessler showed little respect in a humorous but unkind way and answered,

" Id is an Ardt ! "

* It means ..  to make boots is a art.

But he rather spoke in such way cause he is not Britisher or a English man and so writer wrote his dialogue in such a way. Mr. Gessler & his brother can't speak proper English but complicated one because they are Germans.

One morning , John came to that simple shop.

"How do you do, Mr. Gessler?
Could you make me a pair
 Of Russia Leather Boots ?"

Then without a single word Mr.Gessler left but soon he came back with holding a piece a gold-brown leather on his hand and then he started....

" What a beautiful biecen !
When do you wand dem ? "

And our writer John replied....

" Oh ! As soon as you
  Convenient can "

Mr. Gessler was very disciplined, once he heard the request from his customers , he would finish the boots as soon as he could. He would make the boots with the authentic materials.

Mr. Gessler had shoe business where he made boots but he wanted each pair of boots to be a custom fit to each individual and for every pair he made, he used a pattern taken from the customer's for size. He was very professional and even he is not even thinking about publicity of his own work. When narrator asked him about his business and market he said,

" Dey get id all, dey get id by
  Advertisement, nod by work.
Dey take it away from us,
  Who lofe our boots. "

Mr.Gessler spent such an incredible amount of time preparing the shoes, never trying to expiate the process, in order to make them as perfect as possible and because of this he stood behind all of his work. The narrator absent-minded of the fact that Mr.Gessler was so passionate about his boots once said to him...,

" Mr. Gessler , that last pair of boots creaked , you know. "

" Zend dem back ! I will look at dem
Zome boots are bod from birdtb
If I can do nothing wid dem,
I dake dem off your bill."

Not only does this show dedication, but also integrity because he was honest about his work and wanted to satisfied his customer.

◆ Conclusion :-

Without business and work he didn't survived and at the end starvation and without work he died. John Galsworthy wrote very emotional in such a manner that it can touch anyone's heart.

Thank you.

The Archetypes of Literature.... Northrop Frye

Northrop Frye, in full Herman Northrop Frye, Canadian educator and critic who wrote much on "Canadian Literature" and culture and became best known as one of the most important literary theorists of the 20th century. 1.What is Archetypal Criticism? What does the Archetypal critic do? In literary Criticism the term " archetype" denotes recurrent narratives designs, patterns of actions, character- type, themes & images which are identifiable in a wide variety of works of literature, as well as in myths, dreams and even social rituals. Such recurrent items are held to be the result of elemental & universal forms or patterns in the human psyche, whose effective embodiment in a literary work evokes a profound response from the attentive reader, because he or she shares the psychic archetypes expressed by the author. 2.What is Frye trying to prove by giving an analogy of "Physics to Nature" & "Criticism to Literature"?
