Expert Lectures On ELT : Prof. Atanu Bhattacharya

This activity is a part of my academic activity.

Here I'm sharing my review about 3 days Session of the particular subject [English language Teaching - 2] . This session was planned by our professor Dilip Barad Sir Department of English ,MKBUProf. Atanu Bhattacharya dealt with this subject who is Professor and Dean of Central University of Gujarat. He came on 25th, 26th and 27th January, 2020.



¶ The Various Concepts he talked about ELT is :-

1}  History of English language Teaching - 2
2}  ELT : Principles and Concepts
3}  Language Teaching : In Indian perspective
4}  Historical Perspective in English Teaching :
     Western Perspective
5}  The audio - Lingual Method or Audio - Visual
      Method
6}  Communicative Language Teaching : (CLT)

10} Rubric Evaluation through watching the videos
11} Future of English Studies


● 25th January, 2020 :-

On the very 1st Day, Sir introduced ELT Subject. He dealt with the [History of English language Teaching - 2 ] He talked about how English language emerged in India and also talked about the Western period of English language.

¶ Further he talked about English language Teaching has 6 Periods like :

1. Classical
2. Middle Ages
3. 12th & 15th centuries
4. Renaissance
5. 17th, 18th & 19th Centuries
6. 19th & early 20th.

¶ Then he further talked that Aristotalian logical concept are implied in ELT.

FOR EXAMPLE:- 

● Socrates is a Man.
● Socrates is Mortal.
● All Men are Mortal.

¶ Natural method or Direct Method he talked about. For ELT survival is one of the best method.

¶ Then he enlighten us with giving some of the live examples of Phonetics.

IPA :- "International Phonetic Association"

¶ Then he talked about What happened in India ?with Language Teaching.

● 26th January, 2020 :- 

On the very 2nd Day , Sir taked about Speech Acts Language Function.

¶ Then he talked about Theoretical Background and Historical overview of Literature Teaching in India.

¶ The origins includes....

● Charter Act { 1813 }
● Macaulay's Minute { English Education Act 1835}
● Text Type in Early Curriculum
● Important Landmark
● Methodology

¶ In the afternoon session, Sir gave us the task upon finding the rhyming words from poems, then teaching poetry means first we read the following passage and then arrange the sentances accordingly.  It's indeed an interesting one task.

● 27th January, 2020 :-

On the very 3rd and last Day, Sir talked upon Testing & Evaluation.

◆ 3 terms that are used in Testing & Evaluation :-
1. Testing
2. Evaluation
3. Assessment

1. Testing :- 

It deals with a specific, particular objectives. Tests people's ability in a language regardless of the learning process that one has gone through.

2. Evaluation :- 

¶ Evaluation is much more a general term. It gives the particular idea about the object. It includes student's feedback.

¶ It's a generalised objective.

3. Assessment :-

In this particular term , Teacher give feedback about student's work and tell the verifications about the particular points.

◆ Kinds of Tests and Testing :-

1. Proficiency Texts :-

It's not based on your content, it's based on how your language is.

 ● For Example :- 1) IELTS
                               2) TOFFL

¶ In this particular topic it consider  that How much language skills do you have is tested in this all exams.

"Benchmark" (Standard) - proficiency includes.

● CERF :- also mentioned

¶ Then sir talked about this all exams which marking as same as the 'SCOPE' Exam.

There are 6 levels like:-
C2    It's consider as Expert
C1

B2  It's consider as Intermediate
B1

A2  It's consider as Beginner level
A1

'Cando Statement' :-  It tells If you're A2 & A1 level you do these things.


2. Achievement Test :-

¶ Achievement  Test is that- one who achieve the step by step goals or Course.

¶ CCE :- Continuous Calculation Evaluation

3. Diagnostic Tests :-

¶ This function of this Tests are what is your strength & weaknesses are in the language.

¶ Then he talked about "Oxford Practise Grammar".

¶ It used also for the recruitments. And it is not only for English language but other languages also.

4. Placement Tests :-

¶ In order to make a place to another city or country , they have their own placement test and it's required to clear it. Student's own particular ability or scores are not considered in that.

● For Example :- 
If we want to go at Singapore then the student who completed his/her 10th or 12th or anything they persuing.... it's not at all taken into the consideration. They must give the Placement test then and then they give permission to live there.

5. Norm-referenced Tests:-

¶ Norms are usually referred the particular designed which is design by any University or any Institutes.

● For Example:- 
In India most of the University have these 1st Class, Second Class and Pass Class system. And more 1st Class with Distinction also include.

6.Criterion - referenced Testing :-

¶ It used for a very High-Test.
Ex :- IELTS

¶ Then Sir gave the task in which we have to observe 2 3 videos which is upon the language skills and one person taught a particular subject.
 
    So the task is that we find out that ...who is the best in language and fluency and grammar at all. Its a very interesting one.☺️

◆ Merge Session : Sem 4 & 2 by Him :-

In the evening , We had a merge session which is upon the particular subject " Future of English Studies".

* There are several points which Sir had ponder upon that is :-

3. Educational Initiatives
4. Linguistic Explorations

5. Visual Cultures: Film Studies
