Thinking activity: Dryden's Dramatic Poesy

This post is in reference to the questions asked here:

http://dilipbarad.blogspot.com/2015/09/drydens-essay-on-dramatic-poesy-short.html

1. Do you any find any difference between Aristotle's definition of tragedy and Dryden's definition of play?

After Aristotle here is a person "Dryden" who giving a very well-firmed definition of a play.

Obviously, it's a very large difference between Aristotle's definition of tragedy & Dryden's definition of play.
Let me clarify that, Dryden is a neoclassical critic. If we look at the definition of both of them we see the difference which I mentioned below :-

√ In Dryden's definition of play we can see these 3 elements.
1. Just & lively image
2. Passions & humours
3. Delight & instruction of mankind.

√ If we can see Aristotle's definition of tragedy.... It's ended with the word "catharsis", whereas Dryden ended his definition with delight & instruction of mankind.

√ we can see the touch of realism in Dryden's definition.

So in a way Dryden moves further than Aristotle.

2. If you are supposed to give your personal predilection, would you be on the side of the Ancient or the Modern? Please give reasons.

Yes, of course I'll be on the side of Modern because ...when we see something , we try to relate ourself with that., So we can connect ourself more with Modern than Ancient.
In Modern we can see the new idea, new style & tradition also. We can't say that Moderns imitating the Ancients.
Moderns presents some new ideas regarding the present situation rather than Ancient ...so I prefer Modern.

3.Do you think that the arguments presented in favour of the French plays and again English plays are appropriate?

No, I don't agree with these arguments presented against the English plays. As they says that death can not be a part of a play because it is not lively but death is a part of a life. And according to the definition of drama it's an imitation of life.
So why we can't show that part of life?
Life isn't only  a story of one person, so many other people are also connect with his or her.
So to show plot with subplot is not bad. Everybody is connected with someone which gives us the wider eyes to see the life.

4. What would be your preference so far as poetic or prosaic dialogues  are concerned in the play?

I prefer poetic dialogues rather than prosaic in the play. Poetic may be rhyme verse or blank verse also.
According to Neander:-  Use of poetic makes the Language natural.
According to Crites:-  Rhyme helps the poet to control his fancy, but artistic control is the metter of judgement.
Use of poetic language helps the judgement and makes it easier. Due to poetic, poet can perform "delight & pleasure" very well. Poetic language gives the path of an imagination. Interpretation of the poem can be different according to the various peoples. Each & every person can read the poem with a different way nd different aspects.
So we can't says that interpretation of the poem is must be one.
Blank verse is a Poetic Prose  & it's only fit for comedy. It means we find Poetic Prose in comedy and through the use of poetic language ., audience must get an entertainment.
So I prefer Poetic dialogues more than prosaic.

Thank you.

Doctor Faustus by Cristopher Marlowe

"Doctor Faustus" is the most famous play written by Christopher Marlowe. Christopher Marlowe  It's directed by Matthew Dunster  . The error of judgement I can see in this whole play. Here, I am going to discuss about four questions. Which is asked by our sir in class here, I'm attaching the blog link of task. 1.The Play director by Matthew Dunster for globe theater ends with this scene...What does it signify? Obviously, It's indeed a scene that when Lucifer is celebrating his marvelous victory in the end of the play. According to the Christian morality, when someone repenting upon their sin then God gives them forgiveness. But here in this play the Christian morality doesn't work. Here evil wins at the end of the play. In this whole play, we can see the full of wavering of Doctor Faustus. In the end of the play Lucifer wins in tempting Doctor Faustus with the help of Mephistophilis. In the last scene Doctor Faustus feels regret but it's too much...

Discourse on Purity of Blood and Harry Potter

' It's about the most insulting thing he could think of,' gasped Ron, coming back up. ' Mudblood's a really foul name for someone who was Muggle-born-you know, non-magic parents. There are some wizards - like Malfoy's family - who think they're what people call pure-blood.'                           - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets The term "pure-blood" refers to a family or individual without Muggle blood. The concept is generally associated with Salazar Slytherin. ¶   Blood purity is a concept in the fictional HarryPotter book series. It is a form of classprejudice and also has analogies to racism. ¶ Being born and raised by Death Eaters, young Malfoy works as a constant reminder throughout the seven books about the racial issue, and his little hints and nasty comments are a preparation for what is to come in the last book. Harry, who is born by magical parents but raised by his Mu...
