◆ Representation of native by colonizer in "A Grain of Wheat" & "Robinson Crusoe":-
Here in both the novel we can see that how colonizer and colonized people represented. In Robinson Crusoe the character named Friday who is the black colonised man & Crusoe who is a colonizer. The novel talked about how master-slave relationship occur.
In a same way Ngugi Wa Thiongo's novel "A Grain of Wheat" is also represent that the colonial discourse, how colonieco and colonized people ruled over there in Africa. Thiogno is one of the African writer who suffering a lot for freedom and also saw that all things which the colonized people encroached African people's native land & mind as well.
◆ "A Grain of Wheat" by Ngugi Wa Thiongo:-
In A Grain of Wheat, Britain’s colonization of Kenya is the context against which its characters are formed as well as the primary political tension of the book. Ngũgĩ Wa Thiong’o, himself a native Kenyan, uses this context and development of his characters to explore the moral aspect of colonization from both the perspective of the British and rural Kenyans. Ngũgĩ’s narrative argues that, although both the colonizer and the colonized feel morally justified in their pursuits, colonialism is ultimately an immoral and oppressive practice, justifying the colonized people’s struggle for freedom, even through violent means.
◆ "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe :-
1. Robinson : as a white civilized Man
2. Friday : Carribean uncivilized man
In this novel Daniel Defoe introduced two most enduring character of English literature to show the colonizer and colonized relationship. Throughout the novel we can see the master slave relationship between Robinson and Friday.
Friday was saved by Robinson and he gave him the name Christian name Friday without asking him anything. This is the beginning of his rule over Friday. He taught him the English language. He addressed Friday as my man but not to show his feelings towards him from the bottom of heart but to show him only as his slave who used to do anything for him.
"My man accomapnyacc me very honestly,
In all this ramblings,
And proving a most faithful servant upon all occasions."
- Robinson Crusoe.
