Movie review of "The Scarlet Letter"...

◆ About Novel " The Scarlet Letter" :-

"The Scarlet Letter" written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, published in 1850. It is considered a masterpiece of American literature & classic moral study. It is a historical novel. It portrays the various elements like : guilt, revenge and redemption. The genre of the novel is Romance & Historical.

The major topics are included here :-
1. Puritan society
2. Sin
3. Guilt
4. Conflict between emotions & intellect
5. Nature of evil.

So, We [ Department of English, MKBU] recently watched movie "The Scarlet Letter". So as per the movie concern I try to give my view upon this movie.

About Movie " The Scarlet Letter" :-

"The Scarlet Letter" is a 1995 American  Romantic drama film. No doubt there is a various version of this film but we watched this 1995's version.

It is a film adaption of the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel of the same name. It was directed by Roland Joffie.

# The whole movie surrounded by main or the protagonist character " Hester".....

● In movie I saw that, in the very beginning of the scene there are some tribal people who did some rituals over there place like funeral pyre. Where it saw that the Puritan society's some rituals.
The another ritual i saw that is while Hester and her family members first worshipping God and then they started eating the food.

● The Nature which portrayed by Hawthorne is indeed a beautiful one.

● The second I minutely observed that the language of dialogues somewhere in movie were different.

● My another observation is that here in the movie the story narrated by Hester's daughter Pearl whereas in the novel the story narrated by anonymous.

● Hester Prynne is a courageous woman here in this movie by showing the horse riding..... because as per the rigid nature or rules of the Puritan society the woman have not allowed to do or give the permission to do that what she want.

● The Red bird gave some significant idea in this movie.

● John Milton's book referred in this movie which s
clearly indicate that the age of Puritan.

● The women in this movie were shown as Nun which portrayed the rigidity of that time. Their hairstyle and clothes also the indication of the Puritan Age.

● Slavery system also shown in this movie.

● Knitting work also portrayed here in this movie.

● Without husband or having the affair of another man was the sin at that time .....there were no any identity of woman without her husband. This moral ideas here shown through this movie.

● The end of the novel and movie differs from each other. In the the novel there is a bad ending whereas here in the movie we can see the happy ending.

By the way the time changes now at all. In the era of 21th Century we can see that people becomes more and more broad minded.
We can see in the bollywood celebries that they adopt child without getting married and they live with their children happiily.

Let see some of the examples who adopt their child without marriage :-

● So through these above images we can see that now the man and woman both are doing that type of thing. And people live the life that what they actually want.

Another thing I want to add is that I can find the movie from Bollywood which has that some extent the same of this above movie.

●The name of the film is ....Rustom

In this movie I can find that the story of this Indian Naval Officer Rustom Pavri and her wife Cynthia Pavri. Pavri discovers about her wife's affair with his friend Vikram Makhija after the returning early from his duty.

So in this movie also find that the woman constantly blamed by other people, society and court's jury people also. So it's a very significant one.

Thank-you.

The Archetypes of Literature.... Northrop Frye

Northrop Frye, in full Herman Northrop Frye, Canadian educator and critic who wrote much on "Canadian Literature" and culture and became best known as one of the most important literary theorists of the 20th century. 1.What is Archetypal Criticism? What does the Archetypal critic do? In literary Criticism the term " archetype" denotes recurrent narratives designs, patterns of actions, character- type, themes & images which are identifiable in a wide variety of works of literature, as well as in myths, dreams and even social rituals. Such recurrent items are held to be the result of elemental & universal forms or patterns in the human psyche, whose effective embodiment in a literary work evokes a profound response from the attentive reader, because he or she shares the psychic archetypes expressed by the author. 2.What is Frye trying to prove by giving an analogy of "Physics to Nature" & "Criticism to Literature"? Devided into 3 stanzas. This poem is a gem of simplicity. Note the three lovely comparisons. It is easy to see beauty in young woman , but it needs understanding & imangination to see the beauty of old age. Here the poet skillfully represents her beauty by comparing with nature elements.
